What is Depression?

Depression comes in many forms.

  • It may be persistent, lasting two years or more.
  • Postpartum depression is full-blown depression during or after pregnancy. Extreme sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion can make this a very difficult time for expectant or new mothers.
  • Seasonal affective disorder occurs in winter and typically lifts in spring or summer. It is often characterized by social withdrawal, increased sleep, and weight gain.
  • Psychotic depression is severe and may be accompanied by delusions that seem very real.
  • Bipolar depression is characterized by moods swings between feeling very low (hypomania) and extreme high-euphoric or irritable moods often called (manic) phases.

Therapists at Counseling Alliance LLC have training and experience in the treatment of all of these forms of depression. Depression (either within your own life or in the life of a loved one) can be debilitating and dangerous. And, remember this, depression is treatable.
